Free State Festival

The film and music elements of the Free State Festival kick off tonight with a documentary about guitarist Johnny Winter, “Johnny Winter: Down and Dirty,” followed by a performance by Winter at the Lawrence Arts Center main stage, 940 New Hampshire St. The film screening is $6 and starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 8:30 p.m. An opening band will play at 7:30 p.m.

Eat on the street

The Free State Festival isn’t just about visual and audible arts — there’s food to be had as well. The Free State Food Festival will be outside the Lawrence Arts Center at 7 p.m. before the Johnny Winter concert. Grab-and-go goodies will be available so you can enjoy the best of Lawrence restaurants outdoors. Vendors include La Familia Cafe & Cantina, Mad Greek and Merchants Pub + Plate.

Author Denise Low will read from her new book, “Mélange Block,” at The Raven Book Store. Low’s work maps a vivid landscape of Native American and settler lives. High Plains country, volcanic fields, wine country, and ghost towns are among the sites where Low casts spells with language. Hear the work in the author’s voice at 7 p.m. at the book store, 6 E. Seventh St.

Concert for children

This week’s Lawrence City Band Concert is the Annual Children’s Concert, with music selected specifically for families and for youngsters. Music played will be from children’s movies and family movies as well as popular marches. Even “Frozen” will make an appearance. Bring the kids at 8 p.m. at South Park Bandstand, 12th and Massachusetts streets.
