Lawrence man suspected of aggravated assault, child endangerment after struggle over handgun

A struggle between neighbors over a handgun and the discovery of two children left unattended with multiple loaded weapons led to the late Sunday arrest of a 31-year-old Lawrence man.

Police arrested Mark A. Gann after 11 p.m. on suspicion of aggravated assault and endangering a child after they responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons in the 400 block of Graystone Drive.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police spokesman, said that when officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Gann on his neighbor’s porch, allegedly intoxicated. The neighbor told police that Gann was asked to leave but shortly returned with a handgun retrieved from his home. McKinley said Gann waved his gun around while allegedly making statements about shooting people as he attempted to load a magazine into the weapon.

McKinley said the victim struggled with the suspect, falling and breaking a chair in the process, before gaining control of the weapon and putting it inside his apartment. After confirming portions of the story at the scene, McKinley said, officers also discovered that Gann left two children younger than 10 unattended in a room with more than one unsecured, loaded firearm.
