A Lawrence police officer shot an armed man during a disturbance near the intersection of Harvard Road and Kasold Drive shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said in a news release.

The man was taken by ambulance from the scene of the shooting to a landing area, where he was put in an air ambulance and taken to a Kansas City-area hospital for treatment, McKinley said.

According to McKinley, police responded at about 12:30 a.m. to a report of shots fired. A caller indicated the shots may have come from a home south of the intersection.

Upon arrival, the officer was directed to 1103 Kasold Drive, where a disturbance was occurring,

The officer contacted individuals inside the home, including one armed with a firearm.

“During the encounter the officer discharged his firearm, striking the armed individual. A second officer arrived shortly thereafter,” McKinley said.

Neither of the officers were injured. Police have not released the name of either officer and McKinley said they are on paid administrative leave, which is the department’s policy.

Police are not releasing details about the shooting — the names of others involved, the number of shots fired, what caused the officer to shoot, any information the police might have about the nature of the disturbance — during this stage of the investigation, McKinley said.

The property surrounding the house remained taped off Sunday afternoon, with several police vehicles — including a forensics unit truck — stationed outside. Many neighbors said they had been asleep or did not see or hear anything specific prior to a swarm of emergency vehicles arriving, although two did mention hearing a loud noise of some kind around the time of the incident.

The police department has asked the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to help investigate the shooting.
