Sipping up some summer drinks

Summer drinks to look forward to

Pachamamas

Their menu official as of this week, Pachamamas has nine special cocktails for this summer. Most notable are the The Presley (gin, St. Germain, and Chainbreaker IPA) and Calliope (gin, Rosé and Prosecco) cocktails, which both have a light, sour-sweet grapefruit flavor.

Eldridge

The summer drink menu at Ten/Jayhawker in the Eldridge goes into effect this weekend, featuring five drinks that utilize seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs including the apple mint bourbon iced tea, cucumber cantaloupe cocktail (gin) garnished with a frozen cantaloupe cube and cucumber, and basil berry rum.

Spicy summer margarita at 23rd Street Brewery.

Beer Float at Ted’s Taphouse, combining Hoppin’ Frog B.O.R.I.S. stout with Sylas and Maddy's vanilla ice cream.

Basil Rickey (cucumber-infused gin, basil, lavender, soda and orange bitters) at 715.

With bar patios and outdoor seating calling out our names as happy hour approaches, it’s time to embrace the season with a light, refreshing, fruity, creamy or frothy cocktail in hand. It doesn’t matter what you’re in the mood for; this city has all of the bases covered with restaurants and bars often putting their own spin on a classic summer drink. Here are some of the best Lawrence has to offer.

Classic sangria at Henry’s

This mix of wine and liquor — usually brandy or gin — and chopped fruit is offered in both red and white at Henry’s Upstairs, 11 E. Eighth St., and can usually be found in two large jars sitting on the bar. It’s like throwing back a glass of juice that packs a sneaky punch. When it’s on special on Wednesdays for $3 a glass, it’s hard to pass up this classic summer cocktail. Sangria is $4 on other nights.

Alcoholic milkshakes at Burger Stand

What screams summer more than a tall glass of milk and ice-cream? Nothing. Throw in a little booze and you have something that will make the inner child in any adult happy. With 10 creative alcoholic shake offerings like Thrilla in Vanilla, Oreo Rumplemintz Rampage, Why You Rushin, and I Got 99 Bananas, it’s safe to say you’ll find one that suits you for $7. If not, the good people of Burger Stand, 803 Massachusetts St., will let you create your own. The Triple Chocolate Thunder, which combines Godiva dark chocolate liqueur, chocolate vodka and chocolate ice cream, is divine. Non-alcoholic shakes are also available.

Post-Modern Love at Merchants Pub and Plate

If you’re looking for sophistication in a drink, the Post-Modern Love ($7) at Merchants Pub and Plate, 746 Massachusetts St., is what you need. A concoction of vanilla vodka, strawberry shrub, rhubarb, balsamic reduction and IPA, this sweet-tart cocktail is fresh and light but potent. Other mentionable specialty cocktails include hard-pressed lemonade, Scoville’s hot pepper mojito, and Sal’s summer mojo (apple whiskey, green apple shrub, muscovado syrup and nitro IPA).

Spicy summer margarita at 23rd Street Brewery

Take a break from Mass. Street, and head over to 23rd Street Brewery, 3512 Clinton Parkway, for a wide selection of summer drinks including the pepper-garnished spicy summer margarita. Loaded with bright green slices of jalapeno floating in the top of the salt-rimmed pint glass, the combination of lime juice, tequila, Grand Marnier and agave nectar is enough to get you fired up for the season.

Other marg mentionable

Partake in margaritas at Cielito Lindo, 815 New Hampshire St., for the massively satisfying outdoor seating, if not for the variety of margaritas (lime, strawberry, peach, banana and mango, to name a few) both blended and on the rocks. On most warm days, Cielito offers a $5.99 special on the jumbo 27-ounce lime margaritas, so rush on over as soon as you see the sun peek out.

Beer Float at Ted’s Taphouse

Pairing a porter or a stout with Sylas & Maddy’s ice cream, Ted’s Taphouse, 1004 Massachusetts St., knows how to make a beer float. Most popular for the chocolate peanut butter porter and vanilla ice cream combination (a reason the bar is currently out of that beer selection), the roasted coffee, chocolatey flavor of the Hoppin’ Frog B.O.R.I.S. stout with the sweet, creamy home-churned vanilla makes a nice alternative pairing for $9.50.

Basil Rickey at 715

Described by the bartender as a “porch sipper” — it appropriately arrives in a mason jar — the Basil Rickey ($9) is the quintessential summer beverage on 715’s seasonal drink menu. Take a seat outside of the restaurant and people watch as you sip on the cucumber gin-based, basil-lavender cocktail. Subtle hints of orange bitters make this drink citrusy and refreshing. Other mentionable cocktails include Beet Generation, which is made with beet-infused gin, and The Rookie, which has white whiskey, pineapple, oregano and celery bitters.
