Stay cool: Heat to rise to 94 today, with heat index nearing 100

Another hot and humid day is in store today with highs in the mid-90s and heat indices reaching into the 97-102 degree range. The day is expected to be mostly sunny and breezy, but don’t be fooled by the breeze. The National Weather Service recommends that as the heat rises, care should be taken to properly hydrate, avoid excessive strenuous activity outdoors and dress appropriately in lightweight, light-colored clothing.

The NWS advises that caution should be taken with children and pets. Make sure car seat buckles aren’t too hot before buckling in a child, especially if your car has been parked in the sun. Do not leave pets in the car, even with the windows down, as the heat can cause temperatures inside a vehicle to rise more than 40 degrees in an hour.

The National Weather Service in Topeka reports that there is a low chance for some thunderstorms to develop late this afternoon across western Kansas and progress eastward toward the region this evening and overnight. Some of these storms could be strong to severe, with the primary threats being large hail and some damaging winds.
