Kickstarter campaign to support documentary about son of Fred Phelps

Some Lawrence filmmakers have begun a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in the hopes of making a documentary about Nate Phelps, a former member of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church who is now a supporter of LGBT rights.

The film would be made by director of photography Brad Johnson, of Lawrence; director of sound Jason Badgett, of Lawrence; and creative director Terrie Johnson, of Olathe. Lawrence musician Sam Billen would also be involved in composing music for the film.

The Kickstarter campaign, which kicked off last week, has a goal of raising $55,000 by July 7. If the money doesn’t come in, the film won’t be made.

“Not my Father’s Son” would tell the story of how Nate Phelps, son of the late Rev. Fred Phelps, left the Topeka-based church after years of alleged abuse and learned to love people in the LGBT community, who for his entire life he was taught to hate.

Brad Johnson last year made a short film about how his mother, Terrie, came out of the closet at the age of 52 after a lifetime of shame and guilt brought on by her Southern Baptist upbringing.
