40 years ago: Old ‘Sunflower Village’ gets a makeover

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 14, 1974:

The old Sunflower Village, which had formerly served as barracks for workers at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant, was getting a new name. As “Clearview City,” the small housing community was undergoing a “change of image,” according to owner Paul Hansen. “We’ve made some great changes in the last couple of years,” Hansen said, adding that these changes had “brightened us up from what we were 10 years ago.” Exteriors and interiors of the housing units were being refinished in progressive stages, Hansen said, with new kitchens and carpeting being installed, new streets and parking constructed, and privacy fences and shrubbery placed on the grounds. Units were also getting lights for the front porch and new locks on the doors. A major addition was to be a new mobile home park, now under construction on the east edge of town. The new name of Clearview City was to indicate the clean air and “clean feel” of the place, Hansen explained, as well as introduce a sense of stability to the community.
