25 years ago: School board ponders site for second high school

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 11, 1989:

Lawrence School District 497 board members were meeting this week to discuss procedures for selecting a site for the proposed second high school. At the brainstorming session, the board was to discuss criteria in selecting a site, determining requirements such as a central location or a feasible drainage system. The board would then present these ideas to architects who were helping the board select the site. The district owned 50 acres northwest of 15th and Wakarusa, but the school board had recently decided to explore other options. “The concern is to give the two high schools a socioeconomic balance of kids,” said board member Harriet Shaffer. “Another concern is not to give the image of the school being just for the west part of town.”
