Arrest made in last weekend’s pool shooting

June 6, 2014, 11:53 a.m. Updated June 6, 2014, 4:58 p.m.

An 18-year-old Lawrence man is in jail in connection with gun-related crimes last weekend.

Alex Caprice Sanders was arrested Thursday evening and is in the Douglas County jail on suspicion of aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm. He appeared in Douglas County District Court Friday afternoon, where Attorney Jim Rumsey was appointed to represent him. A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday. Bond was set at $80,000.

The arrest stems from two incidents last weekend. The first occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday outside Shots, 1008 Massachusetts St. Police spokesman Trent McKinley said that during the incident two rival gang members were involved in an altercation that led to one person being threatened with a handgun. The two people separated without firing the gun.

After the bar closed an after-hours party took place at the Grove Apartments, 4301 W. 24th Place, McKinley said. Police responded to a reported shooting there at 2:38 a.m., McKinley said. Witnesses reported that multiple gunshots had been fired near the pool and that at least one person had been struck. An eighteen-year-old Topeka man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police arrested Sanders near an apartment at 2000 Heatherwood Drive. Detectives continue to investigate the shooting to determine if other individuals were involved, McKinley said. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 785-832-7509 or CrimeStoppers at 843-8477.

I hope everyone realizes that the governor wants everyone to have guns. He wants everyone to be able to shoot those guns. So why are we arresting anyone for shooting one of the governor's favorite persons who is exercising their right (in the governor's eyes) the right to own and shoot a gun. Uh...not supposed to shoot a gun you say??? Then why the hell are you even allowed to own a gun if you cannot shoot it?????? What say you Brownback??

When you have open gun carry policy, the only people that want them are the ones that will use them. Why then is anyone surprised that there is shootings? I did not rush out and purchase any artillery, I did not want to shoot anyone. Okay then I am what you call a law abiding citizen. NOw the criminal element have open access and no qualms in using their legal weapons. Please take the gun rights back before its too late for you or someone you love.

No, people who want to protect themselves will use them. Better yet, the threat that legal carriers are packing would keep the thugs at bay. Of course in this case, probably nothing could have been done. This kid probably had an illegal piece anyways.

Glenda you are so right. Before open carry there were no violent crimes. Sheesh, get real. This shooting has nothing to do with the legal carrying of a firearm.

Unfortunately this young man and others with the gang mentality will always have guns and will always use them. It's cool, I guess.

That's right, Glenda. This happened because of a new law that will take effect July 1, 2014.

Let me make sure I understand this logic. Once we legalize the right to carry guns, all the people that want to shoot each other will start carrying guns and therefore shoot each other, right? Because, you know, without concealed carry people never shoot each other and certainly never carry guns. Because, you know, criminals obey laws.
