25 years ago: Weather system brings storms, but no sirens, to Lawrence area

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 3, 1989:

Severe weather visited the Lawrence area this week, bringing heavy rain and hail of various sizes, as well as reports of funnel clouds as close as the west short of Clinton Lake and Franklin County. Dale Creed, Douglas County Emergency Preparedness coordinator, said he had come close to sounding the tornado sirens but had followed the official guidelines, which prohibited the sounding of sirens unless danger were imminent. “We’ve decided in Douglas County that when the sirens sound, that means take cover,” Creed said. “We have the feeling that frequent sounding will make people ignore the warning.”
