100 years ago: Woman accidentally pays poll tax

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 3, 1914:

  • “A woman instructor at the University of Kansas has paid the poll tax. How she came to do such an unusual thing is told thuswise. The Commissioner of Finance has determined that he will miss no one this year who ought to pay his poll tax. Hence the book of professors and instructors at the university was diligently studied so that all names might be recorded and none of said professors missed. In sending the notices to these instructors one was sent to a woman whose given name might also be that of a man. When she received the notice she supposed that the right to vote carried with it the right to pay a poll tax and sent a check for $3.00 to Commissioner Holyfield. Later, in telling of her experience to her fellow members on the faculty she made the startling discovery that women do not pay poll tax. Forthwith she put on her bonnet, proceeded to the office of the Commissioner of Finance in the City Hall, and explained the situation. Her money was refunded.”
  • “The police court may be moved to the large court room on the second floor of the city hall building. At present the court meets in the office room of the police chief in the northeast corner of the city hall, first floor. Commissioner Holyfield said this morning that he favored putting the court in the large room on the second floor. This room will be much larger and is adapted to court uses as it has a large platform at the west end. Marshal Fisher is inclined to think that the present location is the best, as it will not be necessary to take all prisoners and witnesses upstairs.”
  • “The Y. M. C. A. will give a series of three free lessons in swimming again this summer to the boys of the public school who desire them and who cannot swim. Secretary Boltz will visit the schools tomorrow with the tickets and they will be given to all who want to learn to swim. The boys must get the consent of their parents…. Last year 60 boys were enrolled for the swimming lessons and half of them learned to swim in the three lessons.”
  • “Next week is the annual commencement of the University of Kansas and is the time when the City likes to be in Gala attire. The campus and University buildings will be decked in their best and the committee on down town decorations is planning to put up some general decorations along Massachusetts street…. To help the good cause the merchants and others along the street are asked to add to the general gay effect by decorating their store fronts and the front of the buildings. Residence owners especially along the streets leading to the University area also requested to decorate as far as possible, and owners of motor cars and other vehicles can help materially by decorations in their cars. A large crowd of visitors is expected and Lawrence should look its very best.”
  • “The Engineers of the university left this morning from Marvin Hall for the Robinson estate where they will make their summer camp. The large grounds where their camp will be conducted for four weeks is five miles northeast of town. Professor C. C. Williams will direct the juniors in practical railroad location, while the sophomore camp will make a topographical survey of the Robinson estate and vicinity.”
