40 years ago: Lawrence researcher studies link between astrology, alcoholism

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 2, 1974:

  • Was there any connection between an alcoholic’s astrological chart and his or her ability to be cured? Lawrence resident Judy Nolly, in cooperation with the Topeka Veterans Administration hospital, was conducting research in this field. Her study was aimed at learning whether astrology could assist in the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholics and drug abusers. “Most people can’t understand why anything up there is related to us down here,” Nolly said, adding that astrology had a bad public image. “The stars don’t rule you. It is more like a road map. It shows the humps and the easy sailing and leaves it up to you to take advantage of that.” Free choice, she said, was still the major determinant of behavior.
  • A recent Gallup poll showed that nearly three-fourths of the country believed President Nixon was involved in the Watergate bugging or subsequent cover-up. Seventy-three percent of 1,543 adults surveyed said they believed the President had been involved to some extent in the scandal. However, this percentage had increased only slightly in the past three months.
