40 years ago: East 23rd Street most expensive option for new city garage

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 30, 1974:

  • A proposed city garage site on East 23rd Street was the most costly option available to Lawrence officials, according to an appraiser’s report released today at city hall. Appraiser Bob Harrison estimated the 10-acre tract on East 23rd near the Douglas County shops was worth $32,200 more than the 6.65-acre Second and Indiana site and $28,700 more than the 5.62-acre 19th and Haskell site. Assistant City Manager Dennis Kallsen also estimated that it would cost $80,000 more to build the garage on any site other than the now-favored Second and Indiana location. George Allen, president of the Pinckney Neighborhood Association, said the higher land cost was a “drop in the bucket” considering the total estimated building cost of $600,000 and “compared to the damage it will do to our residential area.” Pinckney area residents had been strongly opposed to the Second and Indiana site since it had first been proposed.
  • An autopsy today was conducted in London to determine the death of “Mama” Cass Elliott, who had passed away over the weekend in a rented apartment. The singer, who had risen to fame as the leading Mama of The Mamas and the Papas, had recently completed a two-week engagement at the Palladium and was preparing to start a tour of Britain.
