40 years ago: Federal committee approves funding for Clinton Parkway

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 25, 1974:

  • The U.S. Senate Public Works Committee today approved a bill calling for funding of the Clinton Parkway. The bill, approved earlier this week by a subcommittee, included provisions for 50 percent federal participation instead of 70 percent funding as originally anticipated. “The important thing is the bill passed the committee,” said Sen. Bob Dole, who had introduced the bill. “We don’t want to emphasize the 50-50 funding too much because the chances are good that can be changed.” The current proposal meant that Lawrence and Douglas County would have to provide $1.5 million each for the four-land, four-mile highway that was planned to connect 23rd and Iowa with Clinton Lake.
  • Nearly $5,000 in damage resulted early today as a car struck the exterior wall of an apartment in the Edgewood Homes. The car’s driver told police that the accelerator on the car had gotten stuck, causing the vehicle to cross about 20 feet of lawn before striking the east wall of another tenant’s apartment. The tenant reported that she had been watching television in a different room when the car had struck; she had not been injured. Damages were estimated at $4,000 to the building’s exterior and interior and $950 to the car.
