40 years ago: City limits water use by Lawrence residents

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 23, 1974:

  • City Manager Buford Watson today called for Lawrence residents to refrain from watering lawns and washing cars for two days. Reserves in the Mt. Oread water tanks had fallen to very low levels after heavy water demand this week, Watson said. Levels in the two 25-foot tanks were up to about eight feet today, but city officials preferred to build the reserve up to about 20 feet to handle the peak loads. Local temperatures had “dropped” to a high of 95, but the area was still hoping for rain, which had been absent from the forecast since July 3.
  • Monsanto Co. workers were pictured in a front-page photo today pouring the new artificial floor covering at Kansas University’s Allen Fieldhouse. The synthetic floor was being installed at a cost of about $76,000, with completion of the pouring scheduled for mid-August. A total of $180,000 in university funds collected through past student fees had been set aside for the resurfacing, including the concrete base which had already been installed.
