40 years ago: Crisis center moving to new location

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1974:

  • Headquarters Inc. was moving to a new location. The crisis center, which had been located at 1632 Kentucky for the previous three years, was moving to a property at 1602 Massachusetts. Evie Unkefer, Headquarters director, said the move was being made because the Kentucky Street property was being sold and because more space was needed for expanding programs. Headquarters had recently been awarded a $38,000 federal grant to develop an educational program to serve as an alternative to jail for first-time drug offenders. An additional crisis phone line was also going to be added after the move, Unkefer said.
  • At a recent meeting, the Lawrence School District 497 board of education had unanimously approved the purchase of 15 General Electric stereo record players for classroom use at a cost of $1,296. A lower bid of $1,275 had been submitted for a Zenith Nomad model, but this had been rejected because the latter machines did not have a stereophonic jack to allow up to six students to listen by earphone at one time.
