100 years ago: Several sites discussed for proposed country club

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1914:

  • “The Country Club enthusiasts met last night at the Merchants’ association and made plans for the buying of a tract of land for the Country Club. Several sites were discussed and a committee was appointed to look into the matter of buying a site for the club. Another committee was appointed to draw up a charter and to complete the organization. There were not enough present to guarantee the organization but enough have expressed their desire of having such an organization to guarantee the advancement of the work. The lack of numbers was made up by enthusiasm at the meeting last night. It was decided to form a stock company and sell the shares at $100…. Some time this week there will be professional golf men here to look over the various pieces of land that the club men have in view and pass on their plausibility for a golf links. They will go over the land with the committee and the best location will be chosen…. It is the plan of the promoters of the club to build a large commodious house that will accommodate a number of the members should they wish to stay there when their wives are out of town and there will be ample room for all. Tennis courts will be made on the club grounds so that those who like a diversion of games will have opportunity to enjoy whatever sport they may wish. A swimming pool is also talked of as there are natural resources on several of the properties in view that could be easily developed. The out of door swimming pool would be a great attraction to such club grounds as are contemplated by the Lawrence men. It is also thought that the Lawrence Street Railway and Light Company might extend their lines to accommodate such an institution should it be established.”
  • “That well water is no better for drinking purposes than city water is the substance of a report by the Water Survey Committee that has just completed the examination of 1,200 wells in Lawrence. There is this exception: The water in North Lawrence which filters through the sand is pronounced to be safe for drinking. This work was done under the direction of the Social Survey and represents a great deal of work as water from the number of the wells was examined more than once…. It is safe to boil all well water before using it. Indeed, this might be said about the city water. It ought to be strained, filtered and boiled. The survey shows that while there is o occasion for excitement or alarm, precautions should be taken in regard to all water used in the town for drinking purposes.”
  • “Last night about 2:15 o’clock fire alarm was turned in from the home of A. Monroe, 618 Indiana Street. The fire had a good start when the department reached the scene but they had it under control in a very short time. There were two cars in the garage, an electric and a Franklin gasoline car. The electric, which stood nearest the fire, was badly damaged but the Franklin escaped with a good wetting. The cause of the fire is unknown. The damage to the building was $400. It was covered by insurance.”
  • “E. L. Charlton and wife, Glenn Charlton and wife, Wilford Charlton and Sam Atkinson returned yesterday from an extended auto trip in Colorado. They left here two weeks ago today and arrived in Colorado Springs after a three days’ drive. They went over the Golden Belt road. They spent the time in Colorado driving over the mountains and at the various resorts. The speedometer registered 1,486 miles when they returned.”
  • “An hour of the City Commission’s time was taken up this morning with a discussion of whether to curb and gutter the street along the west side of South Park. Six property owners, two of them women, appeared before the commission and urgently requested the commission to curb and gutter the streets on the south and west sides of South Park. The face that there is but $850 in the Park fund and that the running expenses of the parks for the rest of the year must be taken from this fund, was the reason given by the commission for hesitating to make this improvement. The property owners along the park have agreed to bear half of the expense of putting in the curbing and guttering. The water that comes off the hills and through the Park is enormous say the adjacent property owners and makes the roads a mud hole under present conditions.”
  • “The election to vote bonds for the new school buildings was held on June 5. This is July 21 and no architect has been chosen. The bonds were voted for two reasons: the first was because the new buildings were needed, the second was because the buildings would provide labor for workmen at a time they needed it the most. There is a deadlock and apparently the thing is just hanging fire. There has been much talk of holding a public meeting, but so far no steps have been taken looking to that end.”
