Several Kansas University football players and coaches have adopted the slogan “It’s time” as the unofficial mantra for the 2014 season.

Media members who cover the Big 12 Conference aren’t so sure.

The Jayhawks, for the fourth year in a row, were picked by the media to finish last in the conference in 2014. The Jayhawks picked up 63 points in the voting, almost half as many as ninth-place Iowa State, which tallied 121 points. West Virginia (170), which KU knocked off last November to end a 27-game conference losing skid, was the only other Big 12 team to receive fewer than 297 points.

Oklahoma (548) was tapped the preseason favorite, with Baylor sitting in second place at 508 points. The Sooners, who finished 7-2 in conference play in 2013, one game behind Baylor, received 47 of 56 possible first-place votes. Baylor (508) snagged the other nine.

Just 80 points separated third-place Kansas State (377) from seventh-place TCU (297). Texas (376), Oklahoma State (312) and Texas Tech (308) rounded out the top six.

Points were given in descending order, with a first-place vote being worth 10 points, a second-place vote being worth nine and so on down the line, with one point given for each 10th-place vote.

The math in the 56-member poll indicates that the Jayhawks, who finished 3-9 overall and 1-8 in Big 12 play last season, were just shy of being a unanimous pick to finish at the all-too-familiar bottom of the conference standings.

In the five seasons since going 4-4 in the Big 12 North in 2008, KU has won just three conference games and gone through league play without a victory twice. In three of those five seasons (2010, 2011 and 2012), KU was the lone team at the bottom of the Big 12 standings by season’s end.

In 2009, Baylor joined the Jayhawks as the only one-win teams in the conference, but the Bears have won 23 Big 12 games in the five seasons since.

Weis to wash

Third-year KU coach Charlie Weis is scheduled to be one of 63 coaches from five conferences — including nine from the Big 12 — who will attend ESPN’s annual mid-summer “car wash” in Bristol, Connecticut.

The event, which will follow KU’s appearance at Big 12 media days in Dallas early next week, will include a mixture of interviews with more than 25 different shows and writers across ESPN’s television, radio and digital media platforms. Weis, Baylor’s Art Briles, Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury and TCU’s Gary Patterson will appear in podcasts and broadcasts and participate in interviews throughout the day Thursday.
