Updated storm toll: 835 tons of tree debris

A week and a half after winds of 60 to 75 mph tore through Lawrence during a July 7 storm, the total amount of damage is still being assessed.

At last count, city of Lawrence spokeswoman Megan Gilliland said, 835 tons of tree limbs and trees had been taken to the city’s brush drop-off site.

City employees put in more than 1,000 hours last week cleaning up storm damage and will put in more this week, Gilliland said.

Lawrence State Farm insurance agent Kurt Goeser said the storm’s damage has kept his agency at 1811 Wakarusa Drive busier than usual.

“In my last five years, this has been severe as any other storm in our area in Lawrence,” Goeser said. “When you have strong winds you get everything from trees falling on homes and sheds to people finding shingles strewn around in their yards.”

Goeser said most of the damage he has seen has not been very severe.

“My clients were fortunate during this storm.” he said. “There have been some enormous trees fall, but they’ve landed just next to the homes.”

Those looking to get rid of tree limbs and storm debris can pay $5 per truckload to drop off brush at the city’s compost facility located at 1420 E 11th St. The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
