Fix-It Chick: Install a smarter lockset

Installing a Kwikset SmartKey lockset can increase security and save money.

SmartKey locks can be easily rekeyed to match any other Kwikset key blank using the patented smart key technology. Locks can be temporarily rekeyed to allow contractor or service provider access.

Locks can be rekeyed when keys are lost or stolen or when a roommate moves out. Locks can also be keyed to match an existing Kwikset lockset, eliminating the inconvenience of multiple door keys.

Step 1: Remove the old lock and latch bolt from the door. Confirm that the hole in the door is 2-1/8″ in diameter and the hole for the latch is one inch in diameter. Make necessary adjustments before proceeding.

Step 2: Measure the distance from the center of the door hole to the edge of the door. This length should be 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″. Slide the pin on the side of the SmartKey latch to adjust its length to match.

Step 3: With the slant of the latch bolt facing the direction the door closes, insert the latch into the side of the door. Secure the latch into position with the latch plate and screws.

Step 4: Press the latch bolt down flush with the side of the door and insert the stemmed side of the lockset on the interior side of the door.

Step 5: Align the remaining half of the lockset with the spindle and screws of the stemmed knob. Rotate the base of the nonstemmed knob until it is seated flush with the door.

Step 6: Once the knob is flush, rotate the base clockwise and tighten the screws to secure it in position.

Step 7: Install the strike plate on the door jamb.

Step 8: To rekey the SmartKey lockset, insert the working key into the lock and turn it one quarter of a turn clockwise.

Step 9: Leaving the key in position, insert and remove the Smart Key learn tool in the small slot located just above the key.

Step 10: Remove the working key and insert the new Kwikset key.

Step 11: Turn the new key counter-clockwise one half of a full turn.

Step 12: Remove the new key to complete the rekeying process.

Step 13: Test the new key in the Smart Key lock to ensure that everything is functioning properly before locking yourself or someone else out of the house.
