Lawrence man shot by police and charged with aggravated assault out on $50,000 bond

A man who was shot by a Lawrence police officer and charged with two counts of aggravated assault after an alleged domestic dispute on June 22 is out on bond and appeared before Douglas County District Court Judge Peggy Kittel Tuesday morning.

Zachary Ortiz, 24, of Lawrence, is charged with one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault for an alleged knife threat against his father, Edward Ortiz.

Police say Zachary Ortiz was shot at the Ortiz home on Kasold Drive after he refused to drop a firearm after an officer repeatedly ordered him to.

Zachary Ortiz, out on a $50,000 bond, sat with his crutches resting against the wall as he waited for his case to be called Tuesday. He had bandages around his left leg, where he was treated for the gunshot wound.

At the prosecutor’s request, Kittel made it a condition of Zachary Ortiz’s bond that he cannot have contact with any other witnesses besides his father and law enforcement officers. Zachary Ortiz also cannot have any drugs or alcohol and is not allowed to possess any firearms.

Zachary Ortiz has not entered a plea yet. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 19 after attorney Cooper Overstreet, appearing on behalf of Zachary Ortiz’s defense attorney Sarah Swain, asked for a continuance Thursday so the defense can have more time to review the case.
