The two people charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the Memorial Day shooting on U.S. Highway 59 will have a preliminary hearing in two weeks.

Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel on Tuesday set the joint hearing for Brittany Nicole Smith, 22, of Eudora, and Edward Joseph “E.J.” Parker, 25, of Lawrence, for July 16.

Smith and Parker were arrested on suspicion of shooting 24-year-old Lawrence man Skylar L. Workman around 11 p.m. on May 26. Workman was driving southbound on U.S. 59, just south of Lawrence. Workman suffered gunshot wounds and was flown to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. The hospital on Tuesday would not release any details about Workman’s condition.

Investigators said after the incident that they did not think that the shooting was a random act of violence, but they would not discuss any other details about the crime.

After the preliminary hearing, Kittel will decide if there is enough evidence to order Smith and Parker to stand trial.

At their first court appearance in June, Smith and Parker were ordered to not contact each other. They are being held in the Douglas County Jail — Smith on a $75,000 bond and Parker on a $150,000 bond.

Additionally, Smith will have a preliminary hearing on a DUI charge from January 2013 after the hearing on the attempted first-degree murder charge.
