25 years ago: City, developers to meet on design concerns for riverfront mall

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 28, 1989:

The Lawrence City Commission and the Chelsea Group, developer of the planned riverfront factory outlet center, were scheduled to meet this week for a study session to discuss design plans for the center. The meeting was to come one week after commissioners had criticized a newly-issued design for the facility’s facade and pedestrian promenade. “I don’t want the public to think there’s a real rift between the city and Chelsea,” Mayor Bob Schumm said this week. “I think we’re just a short way away from having the problem resolved…. I know there are comments and concerns that we are being nit-picky on design, but early on we (commissioners) and they (the developers) sold the public on a picture-design theme…. That picture was a re-creation of a theme of a manufacturing center from the turn of the century.”
