Tournament schedules set for FSHS, LHS girls

The Free State High girls basketball team received no favors in its draw for the Firebird Winter Classic, which begins on Thursday.

The Firebirds (4-6) will open the tournament against Topeka Seaman (9-0, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at FSHS. Seaman beat the Firebirds earlier in the season, 53-39.

Free State will then face Olathe South (8-1, No. 2 in 6A) or Sumner (6-3) on the following day, depending on which teams win and lose in the first round.

Leavenworth (9-0, No. 9 in 6A) and Maize (7-3, No. 3 in 6A) are also included in the three-day tournament.

Meanwhile, Lawrence High (2-8) is the sixth seed in the Glacier’s Edge Girls Basketball Tournament and will face third-seeded Topeka High (5-4, No. 10 in 6A) in the first round at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Emporia High.

The Lions will play either the second-seeded Emporia (6-3) or seventh-seeded Wichita Southeast (1-9) on Friday.
