Freshman swimmer leads FSHS on senior day

Free State swimmer Josh Terrell, left, congratulates Jordan Portela after Portela won the 200-yard freestyle event Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at the FSHS swimming and diving invitational.

Free State freshman Jordan Portela stole the show on the Firebirds’ swimming and diving senior day Thursday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

Portela won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races and was a part of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team.

“Jordan has been a huge boost to the team,” junior Jack Ziegler said of Portela. “He’s a phenom freshman who brings a lot to the team. He’s going to beat his brother’s records before too long.”

One of those records was nearly broken Thursday, as Portela’s winning time in the 100 freestyle — 48.04 seconds — was just .03 away from his brother Anthony’s mark.

“(Anthony) nags about me trying to hopefully break more of his (records),” Jordan said. “I swim club also, and the (club) time beats my brother’s time, but I still have to go with high school swimming. Hopefully I can get it next week.”

Free State needed the first-place points from Portela since Washburn Rural was in the Firebirds’ rearview mirror all meet long. Free State won the invitational with 469 points, edging Rural by 23 points. Third-place Turner and fourth-place Bonner Springs rounded out the quad.

While Portela led the way in the Firebirds’ victory, he had plenty of help from Ziegler, Canaan Campbell, Josh Terrell and Chad Bourdon, who won their events.

Terrell, who won the 200 freestyle, said that swimming at home provided him and his teammates a lot of motivation.

“I don’t really want to lose because we’re at home,” Terrell said. “I wanted to represent well.”

Another Firebird who entered Thursday’s meet with some extra motivation was senior Hunter Robinson.

“It’s my last meet at home, and I don’t know … ” Robinson said, “I’ve swam here for three years, and I’ve also swam at this pool since I was really young. It’s kind of strange that this is the last time I’ll swim competitively (at Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center).”

Robinson was one of six Free State seniors honored midway through the meet. He was joined by Campbell, Jason Wilhite, Matt Winfrey, Cade Wright and Kyle Yoder.

The Firebirds will go for their fifth meet title of the season Tuesday at the Blue Valley Southwest quad. The meet is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
