KU women lose at Texas, 70-58

? The Kansas University women’s basketball team lost to Texas, 70-58, Wednesday in Erwin Center.

The Longhorns (11-5, 3-2 Big 12) blew the game open on a 7-1 run with 11:40 left in the first half. The Jayhawks (8-9, 1-4) made just two field goals in the next eight minutes and trailed at halftime, 39-27.

With KU losing by 17 points, 48-31, at 16:37 in the second half, freshman guard Dakota Gonzalez scored eight straight points as part of a 14-4 Kansas run that cut the lead to seven with with 11:33 remaining. Texas responded with a six-point run of its own, and kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Texas center Imani McGee-Stafford led all scorers with 24 points. UT forward Nneka Enemkpali grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, McGee-Stafford added 10, and the Longhorns finished with a 43-26 rebounding advantage, 22-8 on the offensive boards. The Jayhawks, who were led by freshman forward Jada Brown’s five rebounds, set a new season-low rebounding total.

Junior forward Chelsea Gardner (11 points) and Brown (10) were the only Kansas players to score in double-digits. Dakota Gonzalez and junior guard Asia Boyd each scored eight points.

The Jayhawks host Baylor at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse.
