25 years ago: KU department loses funding, directors

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 14, 1989:

  • Co-directors of Kansas University’s Center for Latin American Studies resigned this week, citing loss of federal funding and personal reasons as the main forces leading to their departure. The U.S. Department of Education had opted not to renew an annual $125,000 operating grant for the center shortly before the resignations of Charles Stansifer, professor of history, and Jon Vincent, professor of Spanish and Portuguese. A new director might be selected this month, Vincent said today. Vincent added that his resignation, effective in May, would allow him to concentrate fully on administering the Spanish and Portuguese department. Stansifer, who was in Costa Rica this week and unavailable for comment, had decided to make his resignation effective in August.
  • A road-widening project for Sixth Street between Monterey Way and Wakarusa Drive had received $1.838 million in federal funding. The city was required to contribute $787,000 toward the project.
