Group urges Kansans to ‘pass on pop’

Could you pass on pop for a year? What if it were just one day a week?

A children’s advocacy group is signing up Kansans to take a Soda-Free Sundays pledge and to “Pass on Pop” each Sunday through 2014. Kansas Action for Children said in its announcement that nearly one in three Kansas children is overweight or obese, as are two in three adults. And pop doesn’t help — one can contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, more than a candy bar.

Granted, there are plenty of other indulgences that pack on pounds. But Lawrence resident Ashley Jones-Wisner, state policy manager for KC Healthy Kids, said passing on pop is one place adults can set an example for children by making healthier choices. “I think this campaign, Soda-Free Sundays, is a good start to hopefully long-term changes,” she said.
