25 years ago: Slim turnout predicted for primary election

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 27, 1989:

  • On the eve of a primary election, observers were concerned that a recent 3 1/2-inch snowstorm might keep voters away from the polls. Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes today said she was hoping for a turnout of between 20 percent and 22 percent for the election, in which voters were to narrow a field of 15 candidates city commission candidates to six. If Jaimes’ estimate proved to be accurate, between 5,700 and 6.300 of the city’s 28,795 registered voters would show up at the polls the following day — well below the 7,837 voters who had cast ballots in the 1987 city primary.
  • The snow hadn’t deterred enthusiastic local gardeners from attending this past weekend’s annual Lawrence Flower, Lawn, Garden and Home show. “I know attendance was good. All the exhibitors thought so…. And sales were better,” said Dave Klein, manager of Earl May Garden Center and chair of this year’s show. “It slowed down later on…. But when it was snowing the heaviest, we had good traffic.”
