Fire chief says Friday night fire ‘similar’ to 2012 arsons

A division chief with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said a Friday night fire in the 1700 block of West 24th Street was similar to a string of 21 arsons that took place in the same area in 2012.

Chief Jim King said a direct relationship between this fire and the 2012 fires has not been established, but they are “similar in nature” and the fire is being investigated.

According to Journal-World partner Operation 100 News, fire crews were called to Cedarwood Apartments for a possible structure fire at 11:48 p.m. Friday and found a bag of trash on fire inside the building. The fire was quickly controlled but it filled the building with smoke.

Division Chief Doug Green said on Saturday that no one was injured during the fire.

From October to December 2012, 21 fires occurred close to occupied apartment buildings in a several-block area south of 23rd Street and east of Iowa Street. A suspect has yet to be found for those arsons, which were usually small and easily extinguished.
