A 26-year-old Edwardsville man was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly stealing a car and leading police on a 25-mile pursuit.

Dustin Michael Voelker, of Edwardsville, was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and fleeing or attempting to elude police officers.

Around 12:20 a.m. Sunday, a trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol reported spotting a vehicle that had been reported stolen from an address in Lawrence. He attempted to stop the vehicle in the 900 block of North Third Street, but the driver sped up and turned eastbound on U.S. 24.

A nearby officer with the Lawrence Police Department joined the pursuit.

Speeds reached 70 mph as the suspect vehicle passed Lawrence Municipal Airport and then turned eastbound on Kansas Highway 32, crossing into Leavenworth County. The KHP trooper reported speeds of 80 miles per hour as the pursuit reached Linwood.

Officers with the Bonner Springs Police Department hit the suspect vehicle’s tires with spike strips as the chase crossed into Wyandotte County.

“All four tires were destroyed,” said Sgt. Kirk Fultz with the Lawrence Police Department.

Speeds dropped to 55 mph as the chase continued through the eastside of Bonner Springs, still on K-32.

The chase came to an end at mile marker 22 in Edwardsville at about 12:50 a.m. Officers took Voelker into custody without further resistance.

Fultz confirmed that the vehicle was stolen, and he said the driver has a felony warrant for his arrest out of Leavenworth County.

After about 10 minutes in custody, Voelker requested an ambulance, and the trooper transported him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment. Fultz said Voelker complained of weakness, but was uninjured.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says no officers were injured and no police vehicles were damaged during the pursuit.
