? Olathe East’s girls basketball team withstood every challenge Free State threw at it through three quarters on Friday night.

The Hawks then capped things by converting 11 of 12 free throws in the final period, pulling away for a 47-31 Sunflower League victory. East (11-7) converted 17 of 18 foul shots on the night.

“I don’t think it really got away from us,” Free State coach Bryan Duncan said of his team, which dropped to 8-10 overall. “I think (Olathe East) hit us early, and I don’t think we were ever in it, as far as that goes.

“They’re a quick team that handles the ball well, and we’re not designed to pressure a quick team like that. They did a good job of spreading the floor and making us chase, and that’s not our strength.”

Trailing by eight points at halftime, Free State got within 22-16 at the outset of the third quarter on a pair of free throws by Adriana Jadlow. Olathe East responded with an 8-1 surge, including a pair of perimeter baskets by Regan Stone, to increase its lead to 30-17 by the four-minute mark.

But Madison Piper hit a fallaway jumper and Scout Wiebe added a pair of driving layups during a 6-2 run to carve the margin to 32-23 at the end of the period.

The Hawks then made their march to the foul line.

Wiebe paced Free State with 15 points, Piper added eight points and Jadlow totaled four.
