40 years ago: Alternative school planned for LHS, junior high students

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 20. 1974:

Lawrence School District 497 was planning to establish an alternative school for junior high and high school students who were having trouble in the regular classroom. The alternative school, which was to be housed in the First Southern Baptist Church, 19th and Naismith, was to begin in the fall of 1974 and was a merger of the Trades and Image programs at the high school. The district was to receive $60,565 in state funds and was required to supply $26,276 from local support. Six full-time teachers were to work in the school. Besides vocational classes, the curriculum was to include pre-vocational courses in business and basic education in English, social studies, math, science and reading.
