Lawrence police: No foul play suspected in Feb. 9 shooting death

February 14, 2014

Lawrence police say they don’t suspect foul play in the Feb. 9 shooting death of Franklin Spottedtail, 23.

Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said that based on the department’s investigation, no suspect is being sought. Formal results of an autopsy are pending, he said.

McKinley added that investigators have not listed the death as either an accident or a suicide and are awaiting the coroner’s report.

Police responded to a call at an apartment in the 1100 block of George Court about 3 a.m. Feb. 9 and found Spottedtail dead in the apartment, McKinley said.

Initial police call logs listed the incident as a stabbing, but it was later determined to be a shooting.

Earlier this week police said they were investigating the circumstances of Spottedtail’s death and they sought leads through CrimeStoppers.

Either that?

Or Governor Brownback did it, and every prosecutor in Douglas County is afraid to file charges?

A young man died violently before his time, and the investigation found no reason to proceed with any other suspects.

It is what it is.

But no one is going to say so in the police department or newspaper out of respect to his family.

Let's not speculate on it any further

Mmmm Kayyyyy?

Im starting to wonder about some serious injustice going on. This one kind of bothers me. The article says no foul play suspected and it isnt a suicide yet no suspects at this time. Ok somethings not adding up. The original call log came in as a stabbing but when they got there he was shot and dead. So he didnt shoot himself and there are no suspects and no foul play. Then what or who shot this dude....a ghost. Could be time to hang some flags upside down....

Ive lived in lawrence my whole life and seen this thing happen several times with native deaths with no answers. Once out by the outhouse a native kid gets ran over and killed and it was ruled an accident. Another a native kid from west point was at johnnys and was pulled from the river and it was ruled that he tried to swim the river. Come on man this guy was smarter than that. They better re-define the words foul play and start over. Im not buying it.

I just know that if someone was killed and it was some important big wig person they would find somebody in hrs that they could charge even if it meant charging or falsly accusing someone. Happens everyday in the us. Home of the free......right

It was an accidental shooting. Alcohol and guns are not a good combination.

Umm...I've read, and re-read all of the articles on this incident and no where did I see alcohol was involved. That's a pretty big assumption. The coroners report hasn't been released yet.

So, if he didn't kill himself, and no one else "tried" to murder him, but still shot him and he died... isn't that manslaughter? I don't see how someone can die of a gunshot wound and have it be neither suicide nor foul play.
