25 years ago: Most local child support payments made in full, on time

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1989:

Four hundred and sixty cases were pending in local courts against parents who were failing to pay child support, but the good news was that more than $3.6 million was being paid through the courts to about 900 families. “One of the comforting things is that there are many more parents out there doing what they are supposed to than who aren’t doing it,” said John Bingham, who headed the local Child Support Enforcement division in the Douglas County district attorney’s office. However, he admitted some frustration with the parents whose payments were late, erratic or non-existent. “The interests of the child should always be paramount. But that is not always the case. Some people prefer to fight…. My own opinion is that after they have had a little attitude adjustment, the whole family is a lot healthier,” Bingham said.
