100 years ago: In the news: Lincoln’s Birthday, heavy snow storm, high school basketball

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1914:

  • “Washington Post G. A. R., the Lawrence banks and the University of Kansas, these three institutions did Lawrence’s share of the observance of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. A patriotic program was given at Grand Army Hall this afternoon, the bankers simply rested, while K. U. folks enjoyed a holiday of various and different sorts. To the general public the birthday of the martyred president passed almost unnoticed.”
  • “The weather man may have missed it a trifle when he predicted a cold wave for this section of the globe today, but at least he has the satisfaction of knowing that this is the most winterish winter day that has been experienced this season. A genuine, honest-to-goodness snow storm broke this morning and rapidly developed into the heaviest fall of the year. First it was real fine sleet that the wind chased up and down the streets and into the faces of the early risers. Later, however, came the big white flakes and they came thick and fast almost blinding those who found it necessary to be out on the streets. This morning a strong gusty wind out of the north made walking in that direction decidedly disagreeable, but with the coming of the snow the wind moderated and the snow lay smooth and even where it fell.”
  • “Shortly after her child was born in the Lawrence hospital this morning, Mrs. Zack Oliver, a little seventeen year old mother, was claimed by death. Cerebral hemorrhage as the result of a fall sustained yesterday afternoon was the cause of death. The accident occurred at the country home near Reno. The woman slipped while about her duties at the home and fell, striking upon her head. She was unconscious from convulsions following the fall and never revived. The little child which was born in the hospital will never know its mother and the little mother never know her child.”
  • “Kansas and Nebraska will tangle at basketball tomorrow night in the Robinson gymnasium. Not the University basketball teams, but Beatrice, Nebraska, High School and Lawrence, Kansas, High School. This game is to be staged on the Varsity playing court and promises to be one of the classiest matches on that floor this season. The two schools are leaders in their states and should furnish a fast contest for Lawrence basketball followers tomorrow night.”
