A Wichita man has been sentenced to 40 months in prison on a federal gun charge stemming from the July 2013 murder in Lawrence of 51-year-old Gary Edens.

Johnathan R. Rush, 29, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. He pleaded guilty in November to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.

Rush and a co-defendant, Brittny Adams, 20, of Topeka, were both charged in connection with the July 17, 2013, murder of Edens at his home on the 600 block of Michigan Street.

Adams-Humphrey pleaded guilty in January to second degree murder in that case. She is scheduled for sentencing in Douglas County District Court later this month.

According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office, Rush and Adams drove to Eden’s home that day. While there, Rush was involved in a fight with two men. During the struggle, Edens was killed by a single gunshot to the head.

Rush and Adams then drove to Topeka in her Pontiac Grand Am. Somewhere between Lawrence and Topeka, Adams threw several items out of the car, including a .45 caliber gun.

They were stopped by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department near 6th and Rice Avenue in Topeka. A deputy recovered the gun about 100 yards from where the car was stopped.

Rush was prohibited under federal law from possessing a gun due to a 2005 felony conviction in Shawnee County.
