Lawrence City Commission meetings will start at 5:45 p.m. on trial basis

Lawrence City Commission meetings will begin at 5:45 p.m. throughout January, and maybe permanently if the time change goes well.

City Commissioners agreed at their meeting on Tuesday to move up their meeting time from 6:35 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tuesdays for the whole month. If the trial run seems to be an improvement, they could recommend changing the meeting ordinance.

City Manager David Corliss said 6:35 p.m. was initially set to accommodate TV crews from Channel 6, who needed time to make it to City Hall after their newscast. However, he said, now that closed-circuit cameras in the City Commission chambers broadcast meetings live on TV and online, that’s not as important.

Commissioners have said the earlier start time is hoped to avoid deliberations lasting late into the night.
