40 years ago: Car slips off conveyor belt at car wash

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 22, 1974:

The sight of a car that had slipped off a conveyor belt at Rainbow Car Wash, 1764 W. 23rd, drew a crowd of spectators as a wrecker uprighted the vehicle on a recent Sunday afternoon. Hillcrest Wrecker had been called to lift the car out of the drain into which it had slipped. A spokesman for the car wash said the car’s driver had apparently not understood that the conveyor belt would pull the car through the washing process without the need for steering. When the driver had attempted to guide the car along, it had slid off onto a grated drain, which had broken on impact, trapping the car’s tire. There were no injuries in the incident.
