25 years ago: First Habitat family moves into Lawrence home

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 22, 1989:

  • Lawrence’s first Habitat for Humanity home was occupied today by the Gerald and Mary Richter family. The family, including two children, were originally scheduled to move in to their new home at 2705 Harper on Christmas Day, but the extreme weather convinced the organization to move up the schedule. “They were anxious to get in,” said Rev. John Gingerich, president of the local volunteer group. “Their other home was so cold.” Seventy-two people, including the Richters, had helped build the home. The organization had received many inquiries about a second Lawrence home, but Gingerich said the group would not begin a second project until $10,000 for construction had been raised.
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital today released the news that 1989 was a record year for babies. As of noon today, 1,119 babies had been born at LMH during the year, one more than the record set in 1962. “And it’s not the end of December yet,” said Judith McFadden, director of community relations at LMH.
