Pedestrian injured after being struck by vehicle at Seventh and Vermont streets

A Lawrence woman was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Monday night after being struck by a car as she walked through the crosswalk at Seventh and Vermont streets.

Sgt. Craig Shanks of the Lawrence Police Department said the woman is around 70 years old and did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Shanks said a preliminary investigation revealed the woman had been using the crosswalk with the signal in her favor when a 31-year-old Lawrence man, who was westbound on Seventh, turned south and struck her. The incident happened around 5:15 p.m.

The driver was cited for failure to yield, Shanks said.

The woman was lying near the crosswalk on Vermont south of Seventh Street as Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical arrived. A silver, southbound Ford Edge was stopped in the crosswalk a few feet behind the woman.

The woman was alert and conscious as she was loaded onto a stretcher and placed inside an ambulance.
