40 years ago: Students file discrimination complaint against KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1974:

Two Kansas University students had filed a complaint against the university with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare charging KU with discrimination against women and blacks. The complaint stemmed from appointments of Edward P. Bassett, dean of the Journalism School, and Ralph Christoffersen, professor of chemistry, to the posts of associate and assistant vice chancellors, respectively, of academic affairs. Allegations that the administration had violated affirmative action guidelines had been investigated earlier. One of the students filing the complaint said they were asking that KU vacate the posts and start the process again, following affirmative action guidelines, or that federal money to the university be suspended.
