25 years ago: SWB negotiating for state contract for relay service

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 14, 1989:

  • Southwestern Bell was negotiating a state contract to provide a telecommunications service for people with speech and hearing disabilities, according to the company’s local spokesman. Dave Nichols, Southwestern Bell’s local community relations manager, said today that if the company were to win the contract, it would locate the headquarters for the service in Lawrence, creating about 50 new jobs for the community. The negotiations were the final step the state needed to take to provide the new system, called the “Kansas Dual Party Relay Service.”
  • Douglas County commissioners voted unanimously this week to direct the county staff to report on options for holding a special election on a $4 million bond issue to help finance a 14-mile, $58.2 million road that would run south and west of Lawrence. “It’s a very important project for the entire county…. I think a vote is the only way it can truly be carried out,” Commission Chair Mike Amyx said after the commission meeting.
