25 years ago: Historical marker finds new home in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 11, 1989:

A restored Kansas historical marker describing the founding of Lawrence was unveiled this week at Constant Park, Sixth and Tennessee streets. The sign had previously been in an abandoned roadside park about three miles east of Lawrence near the intersection of U.S. Highway 24-40 and Kansas Highway 32. Tom Wilkerson, assistant director of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, said the state highway department was getting ready to close the roadside park and the city had contacted the state about the sign. “We thought its future should be in Lawrence,” Wilkerson said. The Parks and Recreation department had then restored the sign by sanding and repainting it, according to Ernie Shaw, superintendent of maintenance and facilities.
