40 years ago: Renowned playwright likely to visit KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 10, 1974:

It was announced today that the great dramatist Eugene Ionesco was “in all likelihood” going to visit KU next semester. “It’s about 95 per cent certain,” said Bryant Freeman, chair of the Department of French and Italian. “He gave me his word of honor.” Ionesco was planning to speak at the University of Texas in January, and Freeman said he hoped to host the playwright at KU soon after. “He’ll be here, I’m pretty sure. It’s just when,” Freeman said. Ionesco, a major force in absurdist theater and, according to Freeman, one of the most important living dramatists, was best known in the U.S. for his plays “Rhinoceros” and “The Bald Soprano.”
