40 years ago: Search begins to replace KU coach Fambrough

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 9, 1974:

  • The official search began this week for a replacement for Kansas University football coach Don Fambrough, who had resigned on the morning of Dec. 3. “In view of the fact that I have only one year remaining on my contract, and realizing this situation can be detrimental to recruiting, I am reluctantly resigning,” Fambrough had stated at a press conference held at Allen Fieldhouse. Fambrough, who had compiled a 19-25-1 record in four years as head coach, made it clear in his statement that he was resigning because Athletic Director Clyde Walker would not give him an extension beyond the one-year extension on his three-year contract.
  • A 23-year-old Lawrence man was charged with first-degree murder today in Douglas County Court in connection with the weekend shooting of his father. Robert Roswell Gatts, 49, a mechanical engineering professor at Kansas University, had passed away following surgery for wounds caused by a shooting at the family home, 2831 Peterson, in an incident that was at first treated as accidental. The son, Robert Kent Gatts, was being held without bond; he had spent the night at the family home but had been arrested the following day after making a statement to police.
