40 years ago: Driver charged with multiple violations after seven-car accident on 23rd Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 7, 1974:

A Lawrence man was being charged with seven traffic violations after a seven-car accident at 23rd and Ousdahl. Wallace Jackson, 25, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, excessive speed, defective equipment on his vehicle, having an open container of alcohol in the car, and improper use of a traffic lane. Police said Jackson had been the cause of the crash that had sent two people to the hospital and had caused an estimated $6,800 damage. Police said the driver had been traveling at a high speed and did not see the other cars, four in the right lane of Ousdahl and two in the left lane, when he had collided with one of them, causing a chain reaction. Jackson had told police that he had not seen the cars because the defroster on his car was not working. An unrelated collision had taken place at 1:30 a.m. at Ninth and Iowa when a driver attempted a left turn at the intersection, crashing into another car.
