New trial date set for man charged with attempted first-degree murder in Memorial Day shooting

A new trial date has been set for a 25-year-old Lawrence man charged with attempted first-degree murder of a man who was shot on U.S. Highway 59 on Memorial Day.

Edward Joseph Parker pleaded not guilty in July to shooting Skyler L. Workman, of Lawrence, at the urging of co-defendant Brittany Nicole Smith, 22, of Eudora. Workman was driving southbound on U.S. 59, just south of Lawrence, around 11 p.m. on May 26 when someone shot at his vehicle. He suffered gunshot wounds and was flown to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. He survived the attack.

Smith pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to commit murder and will be sentenced Jan. 9.

On Friday, Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel set Parker’s jury trial for March 2 through March 6.

Parker was supposed to have a trial in December, but it was continued when Parker told Kittel that he wanted a new attorney. However, Parker told Kittel Friday that he was now OK with keeping Michael Clark, his court-appointed attorney, as his lawyer.

“This is all new to me; I’ve never been to prison,” Parker said. “I feel like I’m trapped and I don’t know what to do.”

Parker is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on Feb. 20.
