Letter: Whose freedom?

To the editor:

Oh, freedom!

Like Mr. Simons, I remember the days when businesses were free (as we were frequently told) not to hire the handicapped, not to sell or rent to Negroes, not to serve Indians in a bar. (Note: I use the terminology of the time). They were also pretty free to pollute as much as they cared to.

Mr. Simons gives no example of regulations he finds harmful to the economy. Doubtless there are some. However, they have not interfered with the success of Sam Walton, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates — and, indeed, with the increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer people.

Let us be on the same side to try to make this the country and world we want for future generations.
