Authorities have apprehended the driver of a Jeep Cherokee who led Lawrence police on a prolonged chase through town and into rural Douglas County Tuesday at speeds exceeding 95 mph.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said a deputy tried to stop a light-colored Jeep for speeding this morning, but the driver failed to stop. The deputy eventually lost sight of the Jeep heading south of Lawrence, Lewis said.

In the early afternoon a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper located the Jeep near Lawrence Memorial Hospital, State Trooper Don Hughes said. The driver also failed to stop for the trooper, who then pursued the Jeep.

The pursuit went through town and out into the county, at speeds in town of up to 65 mph and in the county of more than 95 mph, Hughes said. Deputies deployed spike strips to try to stop the Jeep, Lewis said, but the driver was able to avoid them twice.

The pursuit ended in a soybean field southwest of town when the highway patrol was able to stop the Jeep and apprehend the driver, Lewis said.

Hughes said no one sustained injuries during the chase but a patrol car used to stop the vehicle is damaged.
